Nitrous oxide faces EU consumer ban under REACH proposal

The European Commission is advancing a proposal to restrict consumer sales of nitrous oxide under the REACH Regulation, citing growing concerns over its misuse as a recreational drug. The measure would add the substance to Annex XVII, effectively banning consumer access while preserving limited uses, including certain food-related applications.

The proposal includes exemptions for controlled uses, along with restrictions on cartridge size, sales volume and age verification requirements. Member States are expected to vote on the measure in the coming weeks.
