On March 7, 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) published a report on the Agency’s January 2021 toxicity assessment of perfluorobutane sulfonic acid. The OIG found that the assessment failed to uphold the Agency’s standards for scientific integrity and information quality after a political appointee was able to make significant changes to the assessment during the final stages. The Agency has rebuffed the requested changes from OIG and argues that the report diminished the actions taken by political appointees during the assessment.
